“Dave,” I said, “are you sure you don’t mind seeing me?”

“You’re my brother,” he said.

He gave me permission to go on in; the back door would be open. “I get home from work around six,” he said. “If you get there before then . . .” There was another pause, a longer one, which made me think he was really thinking about it. “There’re leftovers in the fridge,” he said. “Clean towels in the bathroom closet.
